Basic Bulky Ear Flap Hat Pattern

For any of my hat patterns that I have started with a double magic ring (see this tutorial) you can just as easily crochet a regular magic ring or begin by crocheting a chain-3 and slip stitch to join to the first chain to form a ring and then work your stitches directly into that ring.

 Supplies

If you choose to use Red Heart Soft Essentials – it is super soft and holds it’s shape beautifully. It isn’t too heavy either – it has movement – and you will love how it looks and feels.

Finish off you yarn and weave in your ends.

Earflap 1:

Rejoin your yarn with a standing hdc in the first dc of one earflap; making sure you are still working around the outside of the hat.

R2: Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), sk the next hdc, 1 hdc in each of the next 7 sts; turn. [8]

R3: Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), 1 hdc in each of the next 7 sts; turn. [8]

R4: Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), sk the next hdc, 1 hdc in each of the next 6 sts; turn. [7]

R5:  Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), sk the next hdc, 1 hdc in each of the next 5 sts; turn. [6]

R6: Ch2 (counts as 1 hdc), sk the next hdc, 1 hdc in each of the next 4 sts; turn. [5]

R7: Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), sk the next hdc, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts. Finish off and weave in ends. [4]

Repeat the above instructions for Earflap 1, to make Earflap 2 but do not finish off; instead proceed to Finishing Rounds below.

Finishing Rounds:

R1: Work 1 sc in each row end and each sc around the entire hat. Finish off and weave in ends.

R2: Join a contrasting yarn color with 1 sl st in any sc st from R1 (I always join at the end of an earflap).

Please remember this is a decorative edge so you need to maintain the same gauge as the rest of the hat. If you work this Round too tightly the hat will no longer fit. If you find it difficult to crochet loosely when working a sl st please omit this round completely.

Work 1 sl st in each sc around the edge of the hat. Finish off and weave in ends.

  1. Hi Avery, I apologize. There should be 11. I numbered the row incorrectly! Thank you for letting me know. I’ve updated it.

  2. I love this pattern! I just have a question about the 3-6 year old size, it seems like there’s a little error. For the main hat part it says rounds 6-10, repeat round 5. Then it says round 10, do some sc and dc. Should there be 10 or 11 rounds for this hat? Thanks!
