My Back to Basics Crochet Earwarmer Pattern is a free pattern. This crocheted headband is available in 5 sizes: Small Child (3-5 years), Child (6-10 years), Teen (adult small), Adult Medium and Adult Large.
This stitch pattern is very easy to crochet and the pattern is suitable for all levels of crocheters.
The crochet rib stitch adds texture and interest to this earwarmer. It is an easy stitch to make and is entirely done with single crochet stitches worked in the back loop of the stitch.

Back to Basics Crochet Earwarmer Pattern
Supplies
- Yarn: Red Heart Roll With It Tweed (affiliate link) 150 g (5.29 oz) and 296 yds (271 m). 100% Acrylic. Medium Weight Yarn [4]. Machine wash in cold water, gentle cycle. Tumble dry low heat.
- Colors: 1 skein Stormy Blues (E888-9884)
- Hook: 5.5 mm (I) Furls Streamline. (affiliate link)
- Finished Project Yardage: Adult Earwarmer: 23 g (0.8 oz) and 45 yds (42 m).
- Scissors, Yarn Needle, Stitch Marker

Rectangle measurements before assembly and without stretching.
Small Child Earwarmer (Age 3-5 years ) 3 inches X 13 width
Child Earwarmer (Age 6-10 years) height 3 inches X 14 width
Teen Earwarmer (Adult Small) height 3.5 inches X 15 width
Adult Medium Earwarmer height 3.5 inches X 16 width
Adult Large Earwarmer height 4 inches X 17 width
Gauge
Approximately 14 rows dc per 4 inches and 12 sts per 4 inches
You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.
Abbreviations
BL – back loop
ch – chain
g – grams
m – meters
oz – ounces
R – row
rem – remaining
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
st/sts – stitch/stitches
yds – yards
* to **– Repeat the instructions between the asterisks the number of times indicated. This repeat will contain multiple instructions.
[] – at the end of the row – the total number of stitches
() – important notes AND sets of stitches to be worked within one stitch, or space
Helpful Tutorials
Notes:
- Multiple of 1 (plus 1 for the turning chain) (Understanding Stitch Multiples)
- When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. You can work under the back loop only if you prefer.
- To add one inch of height, increase the starting chain by 3.
- To increase the width (circumference) repeat R2 as many, or as few, times as you wish. 7 rows is approximately 2 inches.

Small Child (3-5 years) Back to Basics Earwarmer
Using your 5.5 mm (I) hook (or size required for gauge):
R1: Ch 10, sk the first ch, 1 sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. [9 sc]
R2-R46: 1 sc in BL of each sc across. Ch 1, turn. [9 sc]
Proceed to finishing instructions.
Child (Age 6-10 years) Back to Basics Earwarmer
Using your 5.5 mm (I) hook (or size required for gauge):
R1: Ch 10, sk the first ch, 1 sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. [9 sc]
R2-R49: 1 sc in BL of each sc across. Ch 1, turn. [9 sc]

Teen (Small Adult) Back to Basics Earwarmer
Using your 5.5 mm (I) hook (or size required for gauge):
R1: Ch 12, sk the first ch, 1 sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. [11 sc]
R2-R53: 1 sc in BL of each sc across. Ch 1, turn. [11 sc]

Adult Medium Back to Basics Earwarmer
Using your 5.5 mm (I) hook (or size required for gauge):
R1: Ch 11, sk the first ch, 1 sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. [10 sc]
R2-R56: 1 sc in BL of each sc across. Ch 1, turn. [10 sc]

Adult Large Back to Basics Earwarmer
Using your 5.5 mm (I) hook (or size required for gauge):
R1: Ch 13, sk the first ch, 1 sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. [12 sc]
R2-R60: 1 sc in BL of each sc across. Ch 1, turn. [12 sc]
Proceed to finishing instructions.
Finishing Instructions for All Earwarmers
Finish off leaving a 6-inch tail of yarn for seaming.
On a flat surface, fold your project in half bringing the first and last rows together and lining up the stitches. Thread your yarn end on a yarn needle and work through both layers; whipstitch (view tutorial here) once for each stitch. I worked under the back loop from the last row and both loops from R1.
Once you have finished seaming the side of the earwarmer, weave in any remaining ends securely.
