Fall in Love with the Back Crossed Half Double Crochet Stitch | Free Scarf Pattern
For this month’s scarf I wanted to use yarn that did all the colorwork for me, so I chose Caron Jumbo Ombre yarn in the shade White Water.
I love Caron Jumbo Ombre yarn for many reasons – the ombre colors that transition so well together, the slight firmness that the yarn has (which is perfect for warm wearables and blankets) and because it is an easy-care yarn that you can pop into the washing machine and the dryer.
You can find this yarn at Yarnspirations, Mary Maxim (Canada), JOANN (USA) and Amazon. There are 10 different color combinations currently available.
Get the PDF for FREE today (from April 21 to April 22) from my Ravelry Shop as part of the 2024 Monthly Scarf of the Month Club CAL. No coupon required!
BONUS: You can make this scarf with any yarn and hook combination you have on hand.
Be sure to check my “You can use any yarn and hook to make this project!” section at the end of the post. I explain how you can use any yarn and hook to make your project. Plus, you can make this in any size, just by changing the number of starting chains, or the number of rows you crochet.

Special Stitches
Back Crossed Half Double Crochet (BXhdc)
Skip the next st, yarn over your hook and insert your hook into the next st, yarn over and pull up 1 loop, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over your hook and insert your hook behind the stitch you just worked and into the skipped st (from the front to the back through the top two loops of the stitch), yarn over and pull up 1 loop, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.
Ch 2 to turn does not count as a stitch. This means you will work a stitch into the very first stitch of every row. So the first stitch will have the chain 2 and 1 hdc. Remember we are not counting the chain 2 as a stitch, so we do not work into the chain 2 when we return to it on the next row.
When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. You can work under the back loop only if you prefer.
The BXhdc is worked over 2 stitches.
To make this scarf longer, work more rows.
To make this scarf wider, chain more stitches using the stitch multiple.
Using your 6 mm (J) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):
R1: Ch 219, sk the first 2 chs (counts as 1 hdc). 1 hdc in each rem ch across, ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), turn. [218 hdc]
R2-R14: 1 hdc in the first st, BXhdc across to the last st, 1 hdc in the last st, ch 2, turn. [2 hdc, 216 BXhdc]
R15: 1 hdc in each st across. [218 hdc]
Proceed to finishing instructions.
Finishing Instructions:
Finish off and weave in ends.

You can use any yarn and hook to make this project!
With the yarn and hook you’ve chosen for the project, chain until you reach the width you’d like for your scarf (shawl, or blanket); or chain until your width measures 6 inches.
Check that your number of chains can be divided by 2 evenly and then add 1 extra chain (to match the stitch multiple).
Follow the pattern as written.
Continue crocheting until your project is the length you would like it to be, or until it measures approximately 73 inches long.
