You will also find the Baby Bean Stitch called:

  1. Elizabeth Stitch

So if you love the ease and look of this stitch when you search online, be sure to check the other crochet stitch name options too. The Baby Bean Stitch is a very popular crochet stitch and it is so easy to use in your projects!

Finished Sizes

This hat is designed to fit to the middle of the earlobe. Since this stitch doesn’t stretch a lot I have allowed 1 inch negative ease, rather than the normal 2 inches negative ease.

Baby size hats reach mid-ear

  • Preemie hat height 4 inches X 11 inches circumference
  • Newborn hat height 4.5 inches X 13 inches circumference
  • 0-3 months hat height 5.25 inches X 15 inches circumference
  • 3-6 months hat height 5.5 inches X 16 inches circumference
  • 6-12 months hat height 5.75 inches X 17 inches circumference
  • 12-24 months height 6.25 inches X 18 inches circumference

Toddler to Adult hats reach between mid-ear and the base of the  earlobe

  • Small Child Hat (age 3-5 years) height 7.5 inches X 19 inches circumference
  • Child Hat (age 6-10 years) height 7.75 inches X 20 inches circumference
  • Teen Hat height 8.25 inches X 21 inches circumference
  • Adult Medium Hat height 8.5 inches X 22 inches circumference
  • Adult Large Hat height 9 inches X 23 inches circumference

Gauge

  • Approximately (BB, ch 1) 6 times (or 12 sts) per 4 inches and 12 rows per 4 inches worked in stitch pattern

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

Helpful Tutorial

Notes:

  • Reversible – flip hat so last round worked is on the outside of the hat to see the tops of the last round of stitches if you wish. The hat pictured leaves the last round worked on the inside of the hat. This is a personal preference.
  • I use a DMR (double magic ring) to begin my projects that are worked in rounds. You may substitute a magic ring (magic circle), or a chain 3 and slip to form a ring, if you prefer. See the alternate starting methods here.
  • Ch 2 to turn does not count as a stitch and we do not work into it.
  • The hat is worked in joined, turned rounds. You will slip stitch to join tightly at the end of every round unless otherwise written.
  • Skip all ch1sp unless otherwise written.
  • To decrease the height of the hat, work fewer repeat rounds. To increase the height of the hat, work extra repeat rounds.

  1. Hi Maggie! it should say “finish off and weave in ends”. After the increase rounds for each size there is a ‘repeat section’ where we work the same stitches (without increasing) until the end of the hat (when it reaches the finished hat heights). I initially tried making a sc round at the end but it made the finished hat look less tidy so I opted for finishing the hat in the same stitch as the entire hat was worked. Hope this makes sense – also thank you for checking in with me – I went back to the post and noticed I had ‘finishing instructions’ written twice so I’m off to remove the second heading. Have a lovely week, Rhondda

  2. Hello.
Thank you for the instructions for the baby bean stitch hat and all sizes. However I am a bit confused. At the end of each size hat increasing stitches in each round, the instrucitons say to go to “proceed to finishing instrucitons”.
But there are no finishing instructions, only weave in ends.
Do the increasing instructions complete the hat, are there no further rows to crochet.
Look forward to hearing from you
    Maggie
