Here’s how it works.
This Adorable Spring Chick Amigurumi is a Free Crochet Pattern. This Easter Chick is quick and easy to make; a perfect crochet toy for little hands.
Make this adorable Spring Chick amigurumi project with your favorite Sport Weight Yarn [2]. I chose to use Scheepjes Stone Washed yarn for my project because I love how this cotton and acrylic blend of yarn works for crocheted toys and because it has a fantastic range of colors.
This small crocheted baby chicken is perfect for playtime and it’s just the right size for little hands. You can make your crochet toy in about an hour.
This design uses simple stitches, just single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), slip stitches (sl st) and chain stitches (ch). You can even crochet your little chick a bunny friend with this free baby bunny pattern. The adorable little lamb amigurumi pattern is now available too.
I designed this crochet toy pattern to be released as part of the 2022 Softie Crochet Along with CAL Central Crochet. This event runs from April 4, 2022 until June 6, 2022. There will be twelve fun, free crochet softie patterns released as part of this CAL and End-of-CAL giveaways too! For all the details about this year’s Softie Crochet Along, please read my introduction post here.
The Poly-Fil Premium fiber fill used for this project was generously provided by Fairfield World.
Poly-Fil is the only fiber fill I use for my crochet toys. It is clean, durable and perfect for my amigurumi projects. If you want to add a weighted component to your toys, they also have Poly Pellets, Poly Beads, Mini Sized Micro Beads and even Glass Micro Beads for weighted blankets. You can order your supplies directly from Fairfield World online in the USA and in Canada, I purchase my Poly-Fil products from my local Michaels Craft Store.

Gauge
Working with your 3.25 mm (D) hook:
- Approximately 5 sc stitches per 1 inch and 7 rows sc per 1 inch.
For amigurumi projects it is very important that you have tight stitches so the polyfil does not show between them. I have provided the gauge I attained with my yarn and hook but you can make your crochet toy in any yarn weight so long as you can adjust your hook size to have no spaces between the stitches. If you can see spaces between your stitches you need to try using a smaller hook, or crocheting with a tighter tension.
You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

Notes:
- We do not slip stitch to join. Please mark your place with a stitch marker.
- I use a DMR (double magic ring) to begin my projects that are worked in the round. You may substitute a magic ring (magic circle), or a chain 3 and slip to form a ring, if you prefer.
- When you work the sc2tog decreases work under the front loop only (it makes the stitch less thick).

Adorable Spring Chick Amigurumi Crochet Pattern
This adorable baby chick is crocheted in continuous rounds, from the top-down.
Spring Chick Body
Using your 3.25 mm (D) hook (or size required for gauge):
Rnd 1: Make a DMR and work 6 sc into the ring. [6 sc]
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. [12 sc]
Rnd 3: *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. [18 sc]
Rnd 4: *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts**. Work from * to ** around. [24 sc]
Rnd 5: *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts**. Work from * to ** around. [30 sc]
Rnd 6-Rnd 10: 1 sc in each st around. [30 sc]
Rnd 11: *1 sc in the next st, 1 dc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. [15 sc, 15 dc]
Rnd 12: *1 dc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. [15 sc, 15 dc]
Rnd 13: Rep Rnd 11
Rnd 14: Rep Rnd 12
Rnd 15: Rep Rnd 11
Insert Safety Eyes between Rnd 8 and Rnd 9. I placed the eyes 5 sts apart (the eye covers 1 stitch so you can see 3 sts between the 2 eyes). Fill baby chick with polyfil but do not overstuff. If you can see stuffing between your stitches you either need to put less stuffing in OR you need to make the chick with a smaller hook size to tighten up your gauge.
Rnd 16: *Sc2tog, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts**. Work from * to ** around. [24 sc]
Rnd 17: *Sc2tog, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts**. Work from * to ** around. [18 sc]
Rnd 18: *Sc2tog, 1 sc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. [12 sc]
Rnd 19: Sc2tog around. [6 sc]
Finish off leaving a 4 to 5 inch tail of yarn for closing. Follow this tutorial to close the last round of stitches neatly.
Spring Chick Wings
(Make 2)
The wings begin with a foundation chain. We work across the chain like normal then rotate our work to crochet across the base of the chain to our starting point. This creates an oval shape.
With your 2.25 mm (B) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):
Rnd 1: Ch 4, sk the first ch, 1 sc in each of the next 2 chs, 2 sc in the last ch. Rotate your work to crochet along the base of the foundation chain. You have already worked 2 sc in the last ch so we skip the base of it. 1 sc in each of the next 2 chs. [6 sc]
Rnd 2-Rnd 3: 1 sc in each st around. [6 sc]
Finish off, leaving a 4-5 inch tail of yarn for sewing the wing to the chick.
Spring Chick Beak
The beak is made similarly to the wings but on a smaller scale.
With your 2.25 mm (B) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):
Rnd 1: Ch 3, sk the first ch, 1 sc in the next ch, 2 sc in the last ch. Rotate your work to crochet along the base of the foundation chain. You have already worked 2 sc in the last ch so we skip the base of it. 1 sc in the next ch. Slip stitch to the first skipped ch. [4 sc, 1 sl st]
Finish off, leaving a 4-5 inch tail of yarn for sewing the beak to the chick.
Note: we leave the beak open on one-end.
Spring Chick Feet
(Make 2)
The feet are worked in rows.
With your 2.25 mm (B) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):
R1: Ch 4, sl st to the first ch to join.
Finish off leaving a 4-5 inch tail of yarn for sewing the feet to the chick.
Finishing Instructions:
- Please see the following image for placement. I use my small tapestry needle to sew the wings, beak and feet to my baby chick.
- Weave in any remaining ends securely.
