Meet Melanie

Question: Who are you? Tell me about yourself.

I am a crochet designer and fiber artist, yarn snob, coffee & chocolate addict, wife, sister, daughter and mom to four. I have my own short term insurance brokerage which is my day job. Crochet is my passion and my hobby.

And I crochet…did I mention that?

Ok, so if I am being honest, I crochet a lot.

I have not been crocheting for long, but the first time I picked up a hook, some yarn, and a pattern to make a baby blanket for charity, I was, as they say, hooked.

​When my little girl told me that she felt snuggled in my love when lying under one of the blankets I crocheted for her, it occurred to me that she was right.

​When we make something for someone else, we spend lots of time thinking about that person, and we pour our love, passion and creativity into the item.

As you know creative people need to have time to be creative. Crocheting is my passion, and is “like painting with yarn”. I love to play with patterns and colours, and create something unique and beautiful for people I love, and I am sure you do too.

My patterns are easy to read, with loads of clear photo tutorials to help even the most inexperienced crafter.

Question: How did you learn how to crochet? How long have you been crocheting?

About 6 years. I taught myself to crochet by reading patterns with lots of photos, lots of trial and errors, and lots of frogging.

Question: Do you have any tips for new crocheters? Any guidance to make them successful at a new hobby?

Learn to read patterns – watching a video is great but you really learn how to crochet by following a pattern and figuring out how to do the pattern/stitch, it will stick in your mind.

Question: What do you enjoy crocheting the most?

I love nothing more than sitting down to a complicated blanket or pillow by some of my fav designers. The more complicated the better – I love a challenge.

Question: What else are you passionate about (other than crochet)?

My family – I have four children and my parents live with us, so I have a houseful of love, arguments and laughter, supper time is crazy sometimes with all 8 of us around the dinning room table, but I would not have it any other way. I also love to knit and I am a huge fan of camping in our caravan somewhere with a mountain and lots of shade.

Question: What prompted you to start designing?

I made my first Melly Teddy 4 years ago for my little girl, she loved it. Her friends loved it, so I got a few orders to make for gifts, and then more orders. Friends started asking me for the pattern, so I thought I would try my hand at pattern writing and fell in love with being able to share my creations with others.

Question: What drives you to create? Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

I get such a thrill seeing my designs recreated by people from all around the world – my group is very active with the most amazing members, who are so helpful. I dream about my next design and visualize it in my head, and then like one would do with paint, I just take the yarn and start designing the image in my mind. I get asked where I get my inspiration from, and all I can say is that I am inspired everyday by many different things. The ideas just pop into my head.

Question: What do you enjoy designing the most?

I enjoy designing ragdolls (Melly Teddy Ragdoll Family) the most, because I know that each and every one that is made is made with love and gifted to someone and that someone will get lots of cuddles and love from the ragdoll.

Question: What tips would you give to someone interested in designing and blogging?

Be different – find something unique to make, take great photos, spend as much time promoting your business on social media as you do designing because no one can buy your patterns if they don’t know about you. And get involved in your group – members love “knowing” the designer, so be the face behind your business.

Question: What goals have you set for yourself for the future?

I would love to be able to design full time so I have plans in place to achieve this in the next 5 to 7 years. That is my long term goal and my short term goals are set to achieve my long term goal.

Question: Who are your favorite makers? How have they inspired you?

Dedri Uys (Look at what I made), Vanessa Smith (Hooked on Sunshine), Jen Tyler (Hooks n Tails) – not only do I love their designs, I love the colours that they use – colour inspires me, it is so important to put the right colours together.

Question: Do you have a favorite yarn you like to use when you are crocheting? What colors and fibers do you gravitate toward when choosing your yarn?

I love all types of yarn – the project will dictate the yarn I use. I do however love to work with natural fibres and my favourite yarn is Vinnis Colours. I make my Melly Teddy Ragdolls using 100% cotton – Nikkim. I also love to work with 100% bamboo – Serina.
