An Adorable Crocheted Owl Baby Cocoon
This month, Carol Hegar from Shady Lane Original Crochet Designs has given me a copy of her Owl Baby Cocoon ePattern to review. This electronic booklet includes 9 pages of written instructions to make an adorable swaddle sack for baby, using a single color of yarn, or multiple colors.
The stitches you will be using to create these projects are:
- back loop (bl)
- beginning (beg)
- chain (ch)
- double crochet (dc)
- front loop (fl)
- loop (lp)
- loops (lps)
- single crochet (sc)
- slip stitch (sl st)
- stitch (st)
- stitches (sts)
Part of the Owl Baby Cocoon design is created by using a mosaic dropped double crochet technique. This technique allows you to create an image by cleverly placing dropped dc stitches into the remaining front loops of stitches from 2 rounds below.
Carol has a helpful video tutorial available to demonstrate the dropped double crochet stitch technique.
Baby Cocoons aren’t just for photo props – they are a great way to keep baby secure when you are passing them to someone to hold. Their little arms and legs are safely contained and they feel secure snuggled up in their little swaddle sacks. The curved neckline of this design ensures baby’s head and neck have ample room while they stay cozy and secure. No more worrying about wrapping them in a blanket and it coming undone as your loved one’s take turns holding baby.
A note about safety: This swaddle sack is meant to be used when baby is with an adult. Do not leave baby unattended when inside the cocoon.

1-Color Version
- Baby Weight Yarn
- 3.50 mm (E) crochet hook
- 5 oz baby weight yarn
- 5 sc per inch and 5 sc rows/rounds per inch
- 2.5 dc rounds per inch
- 4.5 pattern stitch rounds per inch
- Finished size: 18.5 inches around X 20 inches long
Multi-Color Version
- Baby Weight Yarn
- 3.50 mm (E) crochet hook
- 4.5 oz background color yarn, 1.5 oz owl color yarn, small amount of white, dark brown and gold yarn
- 5 sc per inch and 5 sc rows/rounds per inch
- 2.5 dc rounds per inch
- 4.5 pattern stitch rounds per inch
- Finished size: 18.5 inches around X 20 inches long
- Color Chart/Graph included on page 9
The patterns are written in US Crochet terms. Graphs are included for both versions of the Owl Baby Cocoon; however, written instructions are also provided for these sections for those who prefer working from the written out directions. For the Multi-Color version you will need to use the Color Chart in order to know when to switch colors.
