Crochet Stocking Cap Pattern

Supplies

Yarn: Hobby Lobby. I Love This Yarn. 5 oz (142 g) and 252 yds (230 m). 100% Acrylic. Medium Weight Yarn [4]. Machine wash in warm water. Machine Dry. Do not bleach, do not iron, dry-cleanable with any solvent.
Crochet Hook: 5.5 mm (I).
Finished Project Yardage is dependent on size. (Between 100-200 yds).
Scissors, Tapestry Needle (yarn needle), Stitch Marker (optional)

Other yarns that will work well: Cascade 220, Red Heart Soft, Vanna’s Choice, Loops & Threads Impeccable, Caron Simply Soft

Gauge

Approximately 14 dc per 4 inches and 8 rows in dc per 4 inches.

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

Notes:

This project begins with a DMR you can substitute for your favorite starting method if you prefer. For options please visit this post: You Do Not Have to Use a Magic Ring
The initial ch 2 does not count as a stitch.
Sl st to join is worked into the first dc of the round.
If you are changing colors, make the color change on the last yarn over of the last stitch of the round, before you make the slip stitch to join. View post: How to Change Yarn Colors
Do not finish off yarn at each color change, carry unused colors of yarn loosely along the inside of the hat.
Leave off the braid and add a pom pom to the tip for a cute “Santa” hat instead.
Try variegated or self-striping yarns for a fun, colorful elf hat.
For an extra long elf hat: After Round 2, work several rounds of dc (no increases) before continuing on to Round 3.

Using your 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

Rnd 1: DMR: Ch 2, 6 dc. Sl st to the first st to join. [6 sc]

Rnd 2: Ch 2, *1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 dc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to the first st to join. [8 dc]

Rnd 3: Ch 2, *1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 dc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to the first st to join. [10 dc]

Rnd 4: Ch 2, *1 dc in each of the next 4 sts, 2 dc in the next st**. Work from * to ** around. Sl st to the first st to join. [12 dc]
