This month Carol Hegar from Shady Lane Original Crochet Designs has donated a copy of her Car Seat Blanket Crochet Patterns eBook to be given away to one of my readers! These adorable projects are great for when you are on the go and you want to add a little bit of warmth and comfort for your littlest travelers. The blanket attaches around the buckle of the car seat; so the car seat is secure and the blanket will not fall off baby and onto the floor of the vehicle.

Car Seat Baby Blanket Crochet Patterns Review

Each of these adorable car seat blanket designs is crocheted with medium weight yarn [4] and a 4 mm (G) hook.   Instructions include the written patterns (US Crochet Terms) plus an optional graph for those who prefer to work from a graph.

These small blankets are perfect take along projects and because they work up quickly they are great for last minute baby shower gifts!

The car seat baby blankets include two ‘holes’ for the car seat harness buckle to fit through but you can easily omit the holes and make a complete preemie or newborn baby blanket instead.

Yarn and Hook

  • Medium Weight [4] Yarn – soft baby yarn is recommended
  • 4 mm (G) hook

If you would like to make a slightly larger car seat blanket or baby afghan, simply substitute bulky weight yarn [5] and the hook recommended for the yarn you are using.

Car Seat Blanket Crochet Patterns Included

  • HEARTS – approximately 24 inches square
  • STARS – approximately 24 inches square
  • DIAMONDS – approximately 24.75 inches square

Easy to Learn Crochet Technique

These car seat baby blankets are easier to crochet than you would think and with Carol’s helpful step-by-step video tutorial you will be able to master the technique easily.
.
The Car Seat Blanket Patterns are crocheted with an easy-to-learn method where you work with only one color of yarn at a time, using a dropped double crochet stitch technique. The effect is similar to Mosaic Knitting but it’s crochet! This is the same technique that was used years ago when making the Navajo Afghans (Trail of Tears Afghans) that were so very popular.
.
Instead of trying to juggle more than one color of yarn at a time for each row you work, this technique allows you to crochet your stitches into the remaining front loop of a stitch 2 rows prior and add a different color simply!
.
All the color changes take place at the beginning of the rows so this means you are only working with a single color of yarn at a time.
.
Only simple stitches are used to make this afghan, so I feel a determined beginner would be able to master the pattern. You will only need to understand where to find the front loops and back loops of your stitches, single crochet, double crochet and slip stitches.  I love how easy this technique makes it to crochet mosaic designs.

  1. I love the car seat blankets have spaces for the car seat belt so the blanket won’t interfere with the straps or fall off in the car

  2. I like how you put in your review that there is a tutorial on making these little blankets as some people are visual learners. The overall review was nice to know that beginners can make these car seat blankets.
