Adorable Activity Cubes for Babies

Busy Baby Boxes Review

This super cute pattern book includes 2 designs that are perfect to make and give as gifts.

Each cube includes six scenes with little pockets and finger puppets.

The Farm Baby Box includes:

  • a red barn with doors that can be opened and closed
  • a sunny field with an irresistible mud puddle for little piggy
  • a barn window with hay and a spot for a curious chicken or two
  • adorable window boxes with a hanging egg basket (with an egg and a chick)
  • a fun textured roof
  • a fenced in side barnyard where you can corral a horse

Let’s not forget the adorable little animal finger puppets. The pattern includes instructions to crochet a chicken, a rooster, a pig, a sheep, a cow and a horse.

The Fairy Princess Baby Box includes:

  • a castle
  • a unicorn with flowing hair
  • a star wand (rattle)
  • a ‘magic’ mirror (made with a piece of reflective sheet)
  • a large mushroom for the nature fairy to sit in
  • a moonlight forest with stars

The finger puppets you can crochet include a fairy princess, a sleepy fairy, a nature fairy and a little owl.

Written Instructions

The written instructions are in U.S. Crochet terms and the patterns include lots of photos..

The instructions for the basic baby box square are given to us first. Each square measures 6.5 inches diameter.

The instructions for the themed blocks include a shopping list of the yarn colors and quantities you will need, the crochet hook recommended for gauge and the additional supplies (like fiberfill).

The patterns use Medium Weight [4] yarn and a 5 mm (H) crochet hook. Each cube is listed as an EASY level project.

The General Instructions, abbreviations, symbols and terms can be found beginning on page 43. The Yarn information is included on page 48. Each item in the book was crocheted with Red Heart Super Saver yarn. The reflective mirror sheets (something I had never heard of before) are available from a few sources (like Amazon and Walmart).

I am completely smitten with these 2 Busy Baby Boxes and I love both designs included (especially the farm). The price point on the book is very reasonable too. If you want a digital copy you can purchase it for less than $4.00 and the paperback is less than $6.00. The blocks are suitable as gifts for both boys and girls. You could even choose to make just the finger puppets if you wanted something small to stash in your purse for the grand-babies to play with when you are out for a meal at a restaurant. Or crochet the magic wand for a costume prop for dress-up or Halloween!

  1. Hi Cari, I don’t sell crochet items at markets and I really think it would depend on where or who you are selling it to. I’m afraid I am not the best person to ask this question. Many people set an hourly rate for the time it takes to crochet a project and then add on supply costs. I’d personally pick at least the minimum wage for your location, add supplies and taxes, plus if you are renting a booth somewhere, factor in a percentage of that for your total. Hope this helps a bit.

  2. What do you think this completed farm set would sell for? I know everyone charges different prices, so just looking for a rough estimate.

  3. These cubes are so adorable. I am a huge fan of anything farm related. Thank you for your review. Sounds pretty easy to make.

  4. Hi Niki, The Activity Cubes are created by making individual squares before assembling them together. If you check page 2 of the book it tells you how to make the squares. You would need to follow the instructions for the pattern you are making to find out what colors you need to use for the squares. For example for the first design for the farm block it tells you you need 4 red and one blue square. Then it tells you when it comes to the instructions to join the squares (page 3) you join with white yarn. The squares begin with an adjustable loop – which is also called a magic ring. I have a video tutorial here to show you how to make the double magic ring which is actually a stronger way to start (I also link to the regular magic ring if you prefer it too). https://oombawkadesigncrochet.com/secure-double-magic-ring-tutorial/ I hope this helps! Rhondda
