The Yarn

This dishcloth is made with Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran in Buttercup Yellow.

For this Kitchen Dishcloth I used approximately 84 yards (77 meters) of Paintbox Aran Cotton yarn. This yarn is 100% cotton. Each 50 g ball contains approximately 93 yards (85 meters).

Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran comes in a wide range of bright, cheerful colors. It’s a soft, machine-washable cotton that’s perfect for dishcloths and other kitchen projects. The yarn holds up well with daily use and washing.

The handmade dishcloth crochet pattern below is written to make a 9.5 X 9.5 inch project, but you can make your project to any size you wish with the stitch multiple I have included in the pattern.

Weekend Dishcloth Crochet Pattern

Supplies

  • Yarn: Paintbox Yarns, Cotton Aran. 1.7 oz (50 g) and 93 yds (85 m). 100% Cotton. Medium Worsted Weight Yarn [4]. Machine wash, do not tumble dry, medium iron, do not bleach; dry cleanable.
  • Color: 1 ball Buttercup Yellow (Color: 623)
  • Crochet Hook: 4 mm (G) 
  • Finished Project: Dishcloth: 1.5 oz (45 g) and 84 yds (77 m)
  • Scissors, Tapestry Needle (yarn needle)

Difficulty Level

  • Easy

Finished Sizes

  • Dishcloth width approximately 8 inches X 8 inches length.
  • Edging adds 1.5 inches to the height and the width.
  • Finished dishcloth with edging measures 9.5 inches X 9.5 inches.

Gauge

  • Approximately *17 sts per 4 inches and 5 rows per 4 inches; worked in pattern.
  • *17 sts: (5 dc, 1 sc) twice and 5 dc

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

  • When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. Feel free to work in the back loop instead if you prefer.

This project is crocheted widthwise in rows.

Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

R1: Ch 38, sk 1 ch, (1 sc in the next ch, ch 1, sk the next ch) two times. *1 sc in the next ch, ch 3, sk the next 3 chs, 1 sc in the next ch, ch 1, sk the next ch**. Work from * to ** across to the last 3 chs. 1 sc in the next ch, ch 1, sk the next ch, 1 sc in the last ch. Turn. [14 sc, 8 ch1sp, 5 ch3sp]

R2: RS: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in the next ch1sp. *Sk the next st, 1 sc in the next ch1sp, sk the next st, 5 dc in the next ch3sp**. Work from * to ** across to the last 5 sts. Sk the next st, 1 sc in the next ch1sp, sk the next st, 2 dc in the next ch1sp, 1 dc in the last st. Ch 1, turn. [6 sc, 31 dc]

R3: Ch 1, 1 sc in the first st, ch 1, 1 sc in the next st, ch 1, sk the next 3 sts. *1 sc in the next st, ch 3, sk the next st, 1 sc in the next st, ch 1, sk the next 3 sts**. Work from * to ** across to the last 2 sts. 1 sc in the next st, ch 1, 1 sc in the last st. [14 sc, 8 ch1sp, 5 ch3sp]

R4-R19: Rep R2 and R3

Proceed to the edging instructions.

Edging

  • Ch 1, and rotate to work across the top of R19.

Round 1

1 sc in the first st, 1 sc in the next ch1sp. *1 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next ch1sp, 1 sc in the next st, 3 sc in th next ch3sp**. Work from * to ** across to the last 5 sts. 1 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next ch1sp, 1 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next ch1sp, 1 sc in the last st. 

Ch 1 and rotate to continue along the side edge.

Work sc sts evenly along the side edge to the corner.

Ch 1 and rotate to continue along the bottom edge (foundation chain edge). 

Work 1 sc in each ch across to the corner.

Ch 1 and rotate to continue along the side edge.

Work sc sts evenly along the side edge to the first st of the round. Ch 1.

Round 2

1 sc in each st around and 3 sc in each corner ch1sp.

Round 3

1 sc in each st around and 3 sc in each corner sc.  Sl st to join.

Proceed to finishing instructions.

Finishing Instructions

  • Finish off.
  • Weave in ends.
