The Yarn

For this month’s Dishcloth of the Month Club project I used approximately 93 yards (85 meters) of Paintbox Yarns, Cotton Aran yarn. This yarn is 100% cotton. Each 50 g ball contains approximately 93 yards (85 meters).

The dishcloth crochet pattern below is written to make a 9 X 9 inch project, but you can make your project to any size you wish with the stitch multiple I have included in the pattern.

Supplies

  • Yarn: Paintbox Yarns, Cotton Aran. 1.7 oz (50 g) and 93 yds (85 m). 100% Cotton. Medium Worsted Weight Yarn [4]. Machine wash, do not tumble dry, medium iron, do not bleach; dry cleanable.
  • Color: 1 ball Washed Teal (Color: 633)
  • Crochet Hook: 4 mm (G) 
  • Finished Project: Dishcloth: 1.3 oz (39 g) and 72.5 yds (66.3 m)
  • Scissors, Tapestry Needle (yarn needle)

Difficulty Level

  • Easy

Finished Sizes

  • Dishcloth width approximately 9 inches X 9 inches length.

Gauge

  • Approximately 4 sets of (2 dc, ch2, 2 dc, CL) per 4 inches and 7 rows per 4 inches, worked in pattern.

You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.

  • * to **– Repeat the instructions between the asterisks the number of times indicated. This repeat will contain multiple instructions.
  • [] – at the end of the row – the total number of stitches
  • () – important notes AND sets of stitches to be worked within one stitch, or space

Special Stitches

Cluster (CL)

Yarn over, insert hook in first stitch. Yarn over, pull up 1 loop. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops. Skip 3 stitches. Yarn over insert in next stitch. Yarn over, pull up 1 loop, (yarn over pull through 2 loops) 3 times.

Helpful Tutorials

Notes:

  • Stitch multiple: 6
  • Initial ch 2 counts as 1 dc. 
  • When I work into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. Feel free to work in the back loop instead if you prefer.
  • To make this dishcloth longer, work more repeat rows.
  • To make this dishcloth wider, chain more stitches using the stitch multiple.

Farmhouse Dishcloth Crochet Pattern

This project is crocheted widthwise in rows.

Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

R1: Ch 30, sk the first 2 chs (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in the next ch. *(2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the next ch, CL (see special stitches) over the next 5 sts**. Work from * to ** across to the last 3 chs. (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the next ch, 1 dc in each of the next 2 chs. Turn. [24 dc, 4 CL, 5 ch1sp]

R2: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in the next dc, sk the next 2 dc. *(2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the next ch1sp, CL over the next 5 sts**. Work from * to ** across to the last ch1sp. (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the next ch1sp, sk the next 2 dc. 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts. Turn. [24 dc, 4 CL, 5 ch1sp]

R4-R13: Rep R3

Do not finish off.

Proceed to edging instructions.

Edging

The edging can be worked in rounds around the outside of the dishcloth.

Using your 4 mm (G) crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

Rnd 1: Ch 1, rotate, work sc evenly along the side edge to the corner, ch 1 in corner. Rotate, work sc in each ch across to the corner, ch 1 at corner. Rotate, work sc evenly along the side edge to the corner (try to match the number you made on the opposite side edge), ch 1 at corner. Rotate, work sc across the top edge.

Rnd 2: Work 1 sc in each st around and work 3 sc in each corner ch1sp.

Rnd 3: Work 1 sc in each st around and work 3 sc in each corner ch1sp.

Proceed to finishing instructions.

Finishing Instructions:

  • Finish off and weave in ends.
