I have tried to include important details for each of the patterns linked below; such as the sizes available and the type of yarn and size crochet hook that were used.

I’ve also included specifics like if pockets are included, the pattern makes high waisted shorts, long shorts and if it is a beginner crochet shorts pattern, or a more difficult project to make.

Next, take a look at the details below to see which design, yarn, and fit will work best for your next project.

Crochet Shorts Sizes

Sizing is one of the most important steps when making shorts.

The free crochet patterns I’ve found include:

After checking your size, move on to the next section to learn how these crochet shorts fit and how to adjust them if needed.

How Do Crochet Shorts Fit?

You want to be sure the crochet shorts pattern you choose fits you well in details like fit, drawstrings, pockets, and leg length.

Fit: Are the shorts designed to be a snug fit? or to have a little extra room? does the design use a stitch that allows for a good bit of stretch?

Waist Fit: This is equally important because some of the shorts are designed to use a drawstring to tighten the fabric around your waist. While this is a great way to provide a little extra room, it is also possible that you cannot achieve the perfect cinch required to keep the shorts where you want them on your waist. (I personally dislike cinched waistbands. This may be because of my size (3XL) but I always find them very uncomfortable).

Leg Length: Do the shorts provide enough leg length? Or do you need to customize the pattern before you begin to account for extra leg length?

Some patterns create a close fit (like the Shell Shorts pattern) while others use a drawstring to adjust the waist of the shorts to fit (like the Summer Breeze Shorts).

Once you’ve decided on the fit, you’re ready to start crocheting. The next section shows the main ways to construct crochet shorts step by step.

How to Make Crochet Shorts Step by Step

There are a few ways to crochet shorts, and each method affects the fit and finish.

You can:

The benefit to making crochet shorts in the round is that you will be able to try them on as you crochet. When they are worked from the waist down, you will also be able to customize the leg length quite easily.

Each method has its advantages, so choose the one that suits your comfort level before you pick your yarn.

Best Yarns to use for Crochet Shorts

Many designers share yarn suggestions to help you get the best results. In general, lightweight cotton and blends keep your shorts cool and breathable. The free comfy cotton shorts pattern by Farrah Hodgson is an excellent choice for summer.

Cotton yarns and cotton yarn blends are perfect warm weather fibers because they are light and breathable. There are many easy crochet shorts pattern listed that use cotton and other natural fibers, like linen yarns, bamboo yarns and yarn blends.

Acrylic yarns, while affordable, do not create a breathable fabric so they are not the best suited for summer clothing like crochet skirts and crochet summer shorts. They would be more suitable for shorts you would wear at the beginning of autumn, or early spring.

You will find free crochet shorts patterns in the following yarn weights included below:

Fingering Weight Yarn, Medium Worsted Weight Yarn, Light DK Weight Yarn and Sport Weight Yarn.

Now that you know which yarns work best, let’s look at the lacy and lightweight crochet shorts patterns below.
