How do Crochet Shorts Fit?
You want to be sure the crochet shorts pattern you choose is perfect for you in details like fit, drawstrings, pockets and leg length.
Fit: Are the shorts designed to be a snug fit? or to have a little extra room? does the design use a stitch that allows for a good bit of stretch?
Leg Length: Do the shorts provide enough leg length? Or do you need to customize the pattern before you begin to account for extra leg length?
Some of the patterns listed are designed to be close-fitting (like the shell shorts pattern) while others make use of a drawstring to tighten and cinch the waist of the shorts to fit (like the Summer Breeze Shorts).
How to Make Crochet Shorts
- crochet shorts in the round, in one piece, from the waist to the thigh
- crochet shorts in panels and then sew the panels together to make the finished shorts
- crochet shorts out of granny squares
- crochet shorts made from your body measurements (waist circumference, etc.)
The benefit to making crochet shorts in the round is that you will be able to try them on as you crochet. When they are worked from the waist down, you will also be able to customize the leg length quite easily.
Best Yarns to use for Crochet Shorts
Many of the patterns include recommendations for the type of yarn that works best for crochet shorts. The free comfy cotton shorts pattern by Farrah Hodgson is an excellent choice for summer.
Cotton yarns and cotton yarn blends are perfect warm weather fibers because they are light and breathable. There are many easy crochet shorts pattern listed that use cotton and other natural fibers, like linen yarns, bamboo yarns and yarn blends.
Acrylic yarns, while affordable, do not create a breathable fabric so they are not the best suited for summer clothing like crochet skirts and crochet summer shorts. They would be more suitable for shorts you would wear at the beginning of autumn, or early spring.
