The crochet cables in the Trinity Cabled Hat are sophisticated and beautiful! This pattern is rated Intermediate – you’ll need to know or be eager to learn the basic crochet stitches, as well as post stitches. You will need 115g of worsted weight yarn (used here, Sweet Georgia Trinity Worsted) & a 5 mm hook. Other notions: a pompom or pompom maker, yarn needle, and some stitch markers.
Trinity Cabled Hat Crochet Pattern
- Yarn: SweetGeorgia Yarns Superwash Trinity Worsted. 200 yds / 183 m and 4 oz / 115 g skein. 70% Superwash Merino, 20% Cashmere, 10% Silk. Weight Yarn . Machine-washable.
- Hook: 5 mm (H).
- Finished Project Yardage: Hat: 115 g (4 oz) and 200 yds (183 m)
- Scissors, Yarn Needle, Pompom (pompom maker)
Small – 18 inches (45 cm) circumference
Medium – 20 inches (50 cm) circumference
Large – 22 inches (55 cm) circumference
Hat Brim approximately 7 rows per 2 inches (5 cm) and 6 sts per 2 inches (5 cm)
Hat Body approximately 7 rows per 2 inches (5 cm) and 8 sts per 2 inches (5 cm)
You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used for your project will also be different.
US Terminology used
1st – first
2nd – second
BLO – back loop only
bpdc – back post double crochet
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
ea – each
fpdc – front post double crochet
fpdc2tog – front post double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease)
hdc – half double crochet
hdc2tog – half double crochet 2 stitches together (decrease)
sc – single crochet
sc-blo – single crochet back loop only
sk – skip
sl st – slip stitch
st – stitch
* Complete the instructions following an asterisk the number of times indicated. This repeat will contain multiple instructions.
() – stitch counts small (medium, large)
- Brim is worked first in rows and sewn at short ends.
- Stitches are then picked up around the brim to work the hat.
- The instructions are written for the smallest size. If changes are necessary for the larger sizes, the instructions are written in parentheses like this: Small (Medium, Large). If only one number is provided, it applies to all sizes.
- The initial ch 2 counts as 1 hdc unless otherwise indicated
- The initial ch 3 does not count as a dc

Trinity Cabled Hat Pattern Instructions
Using your 5 mm (H) hook (or size required for gauge) and leaving an 8-10 inch yarn tail:
The hat brim is worked in rows.
Row 1: Ch 7, sc in 2nd ch and in each across. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in 1st st, sc-blo in next 4 sts, sc in last st. Turn.
Rows 3-45 (51, 60): Repeat row 2.
Finish off. Sew short ends together using the yarn tail you left at the beginning of the project. Weave in ends.
The hat body is crocheted in closed (joined) rounds.
Join yarn to brim with sl st, at seam.
Round 1: Ch 2 (does not count as hdc here or throughout), hdc in ea row end around, sl st to 1st hdc. 45 (51, 60 sts)
Round 2: Ch 3, (does not count as dc here or throughout), fpdc around 1st hdc, fpdc around next, 2 hdc in next, *fpdc around next 2, 2 hdc in next. Repeat from * around, sl st to 1st fpdc. 60 (68, 80 sts)
Round 3: Ch 3, sk 1st fpdc, fpdc around next, fpdc around skipped fpdc, hdc in next 2 hdc, *sk fpdc, fpdc around next, fpdc around skipped fpdc, hdc in next 2 hdc. Repeat from * around, sl st to 1st fpdc.
Round 4: Ch 3, fpdc around 1st fpdc, fpdc around next, hdc in next 2 hdc, *fpdc around next 2 fpdc, hdc in next 2 hdc. Repeat from * around, sl st to 1st fpdc.
Round 5: Ch 3, sk 1st fpdc, fpdc around next, fpdc around skipped fpdc, sk 1st hdc, hdc in next, hdc in skipped hdc,*sk fpdc, fpdc around next, fpdc around skipped fpdc, sk 1st hdc, hdc in next, hdc in skipped hdc. Repeat from * around, sl st to 1st fpdc.
Round 6 : Repeat round 4.
Rounds 7-9: Repeat rounds 3-5.
♦ Rounds 10-13: Repeat rounds 6-9.
♦ SMALL SIZE ONLY end at round 12, and go directly to round 17.
Rounds 14-16: Repeat rows 6-8.
Round 17: Ch 3, sk 1st fpdc, fpdc around next, fpdc around skipped fpdc, hdc2tog, *sk fpdc, fpdc around next, fpdc around skipped fpdc, hdc2tog. Repeat from * around, sl st to 1st fpdc. 45 (51, 60 sts)
Round 18: Ch 3, fpdc around 1st fpdc, fpdc around next, sl st in next, *fpdc around next 2, sl st in next. Repeat from * around, sl st to 1st fpdc. 45 (51, 60 sts)
Round 19: Ch 3, fpdc around 1st fpdc, fpdc around ea fpdc, skipping all sl sts. Sl st to 1st fpdc. 30 (34, 40 sts)
Round 20: Ch 3, fpdc2tog around 1st and 2nd fpdc, *fpdc2tog around next 2. Repeat from * around, sl st to 1st fpdc. 15 (17, 20 sts)
Finish off leaving a long tail.
Weave tail through top stitches. Pull tight to close.
Weave in all ends.
Block lightly as desired.
