Native American Hats – Pattern Set Review
Native American Hats #617 is a pattern collection including 6 stunning hat designs. Each of these designs includes instructions to make the hat in three different sizes.
Carol made many of these hats for her family for Christmas and they love them! They are quite quick to work up (except the orange hat: Santa Fe).
The Sante Fe hat is worked back and forth in rows of single crochet, so it does take a little bit more time to complete but the finished hat is actually one of my personal favorites from this set and I think it is worth the extra time and effort.
These beautiful designs are much easier to crochet than you would think and with Carol’s helpful step-by-step video tutorial you will be able to master the technique easily.
These gorgeous Native American Hats are crocheted with an easy-to-learn method where you work only one color at a time, using a dropped double crochet stitch technique. Instead of trying to juggle more than one color of yarn at a time for each row you work, this technique allows you to crochet your stitches into the remaining front loop of a stitch 2 rows prior and add a different color simply! This means you only work with a single color of yarn for each row you are working!
The patterns included in the Native American Hats #617 set are:
- Eagle. Sizes: Men, Woman/Teen and Toddler. Style: Beanie. Worked bottom-up.
- Fiesta. Sizes: Men, Woman/Teen and 12-18 months. Style: Slouchy Hat. Worked bottom-up.
- Tribal Heritage. Sizes: Men, Woman/Teen and Child/Toddler. Style: Slouchy Hat. Worked bottom-up.
- Traditional Motifs. Sizes: Men, Woman/Teen and Child/Toddler. Style: Slouchy Hat. Worked bottom-up.
- Tribal Spirit. Sizes: Men, Woman/Teen and 12-18 month. Style: Beanie. Worked Top-down.
- Santa Fe. Sizes: Men, Woman/Teen and Toddler. Style: Toboggan Hat. Worked back and forth in rows, before working the brim in rounds.
Yarn Used for the Patterns
The yarn used and the hook used varies for each pattern size. The men’s hats are generally worked with medium weight (worsted) yarn , while the women/teen sized hats are worked with DK (or sport) weight yarn OR medium weight (worsted weight) yarn . The child/toddler/12-18 month hats are worked in DK (or sport) weight yarn.
U.S. Crochet Terms
The Native American Hats patterns are written out in full, in U.S. crochet terminology. For instructions which are being repeated a certain number of times, an “X” has been used to indicate “times”. For example, if you need to repeat something 9 times the instructions will be (sc, dc) 9X. Another way of writing this (in an expanded form) would be *1 sc in the next stitch, 1 dc in the next stitch**. Rep from * to ** nine times.
Each pattern includes a graph for the color-work sections but the instructions have also been provided, written out in full, in the text of the pattern. You can choose whether, or not, to use the graph or to follow the written instructions.
Hat Heights and Lengths
It is relatively easy to change the hat heights so you can make any beanie a slouchy hat and vice versa. Information is included on page 2 to help you with this.
