Do you know how food works? When I was selecting which books I’d like to review from DK Canada this fall, this was my very first choice. I think it is important to understand how things work – especially when these things affect our lives on a daily basis. I’ve been struggling with my weight my whole life and I thought maybe if understand How Food Works I might be able to make more educated choices when it comes to what I choose to eat.

How Food Works – Book Review
The information included in How Food Works is presented in a very visual manner, with brightly colored info-graphics and bold section headings. Important facts catch your eye quickly in different colors, larger font sizes and in bold typeface.
How Food Works begins by exploring Our Diet History and how what we eat has changed over time based on our location and our environment.
Next we are introduced to Food Fundamentals, which includes topics about nutrition basics, hunger and appetite, flavor, digestion and different types of foods (whole foods vs. convenience foods).
We are introduced to Storing and Cooking and the different ways food can be preserved. Safe cooking, additives, food processing, fermentation, preservation and food freshness are only some of the topics included.
Types of foods, drinks, diets and even our food and the environment are touched upon in detail.
Superfoods are included in the Types of Food Section.
The Types of Food section also includes information about a variety of topics including meat, dairy, milk and lactose, gluten, soy, phytochemicals, brassicas, spices, herbs, sugars, alternative foods and processed meats.
The Diets Section includes different eating styles like Western Diets, Eastern Diets, Religious and Ethical Diets, as well as, Vegetarians and Vegans. You will also find information about allergies, popular diets, detoxing, diet and blood pressure, heart disease and stroke, cancer, osteoporosis and anemia. The Food and Environment section is very interesting and includes fair trade, food miles, genetically modified food, overfishing and sustainable fishing, future foods and feeding the world.
