Welcome to the November Scarf of the Month Club Free Pattern! This month I have created a super simple project for you to make. I know the gift giving season is fast approaching and we are all under more stress than normal to try to get everything done for the holidays! This scarf is a one-evening project. It is a extremely simple pattern and you can make it watching television or listening to your audiobook. One ball of yarn is all it takes to make this pretty project and it is perfect for men and women. A totally unisex scarf. You can add the optional fringe – or seam the ends together using a whipstitch to make an infinity scarf. You can make it wider or narrower too – I’ve included the stitch repeat for you and it is an easy one ๐Ÿ™‚ Have fun whipping up this Sinfully Simple Unisex Winter Scarf! Just one skein of yarn – Caron Cakes is perfect for this project – and a 5 mm hook.

This is just one of the Scarf of the Month Club Free Patterns for the month of November 2016!

Notes

  • Look at your Caron Cake if you are using the same yarn as I did. Does your yarn start and end with the same color? Mine had the same color in the center of the ball and the final outer wrap on the ball. When I crocheted my scarf I repeated R3 and R4 until I reached the final color (which was the same as my first color). Then I worked 1 final row (a repeat of R3 because I wanted 15 hdc to be on the last row for my fringe to have the same number of hdc on each end) in the next color. I wanted my last row worked to be the same color as my fringe. You do not have to do this and if you are not using a fringe you can definitely continue repeating the pattern until you run out of yarn!

Pattern Instructions

R1: Ch 31. (RS): 1 hdc in 5th ch from hook (the skipped 4 chs count as 1 skipped ch, 1 hdc and 1 ch1sp); *ch 1, sk 1 ch, 1 hdc in next ch**. Rep from * to ** across. Turn. [15 hdc, 14 ch1sp]

R2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 hdc and 1 ch1sp). 1 hdc in first ch1sp; *ch 1, sk 1 hdc, 1 hdc in next ch1sp; rep from * to ** across, ending with 1 hdc in the top of the turning ch (which is counting as a ch1sp and 1 hdc); turn. [15 hdc, 14 ch1sp]

R3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 hdc and 1 ch1sp). 1 hdc in first ch1sp; ch 1, sk 1 hdc, *1 hdc in next ch1sp, ch 1, sk 1 hdc**; rep from * to ** across; ending with 1 hdc in the 2nd ch of the turning ch (which is counting as a ch1sp and 1 hdc); turn. [15 hdc, 14 ch1sp]

R4: Ch 3 (counts as 1 hdc and 1 ch1sp). 1 hdc in first ch1sp; *ch 1, sk 1 hdc, 1 hdc in next ch1sp** rep from * to ** across, end with 1 hdc in the top of the turning ch (which is counting as a ch1sp and 1 hdc); turn. [15 hdc, 14 ch1sp]

Rep R3 and R4, 104 times. Repeat R3 one more time. Finish off and weave in ends.

Optional Fringe

Cut a piece of cardboard 6 inches wide. Wrap your remaining yarn around the cardboard to create sixty 12-inch strands of yarn. This means wrap the yarn 60 times and cut on only one edge of the cardboard. This will give you 60 strands (each 12 inches long).

Find the RS (right side) of your scarf and then flip it over.

Now take 2-strands at a time and add them to the hdc stitches on both final edges of your scarf, as a fringe, like so:

Unisex Winter Scarf Fringe 1

Step 1: Insert your hook into the hdc stitch.

Unisex Winter Scarf Fringe 2

Step 2: Pick up 2 of the strands of fringe yarn you precut to 12 inches in length. Fold the fringe over the hook (so 6 inches is on each side of the hook).

Unisex Winter Scarf Fringe 3

Step 3: Pull the 2 fringe strands through the stitch.

Unisex Winter Scarf Fringe 4

Step 4: Yarn over the hook (using all 4 yarn ends from the fringe strands) and pull them all through the loop.

Unisex Winter Scarf Fringe 5

Step 5: Pull all the yarn ends completely through the loop (just like if you were finishing off).

Unisex Winter Scarf Fringe 7

Step 6: Notice how the back of the fringe knot is facing you. The right side (pretty side) of the fringe is on the other side of the fabric.

Fringe Wrong Side Unisex Winter Scarf

After you are finished this is what your scarf will look like on the side facing you. The wrong side of your ‘fringe’.

Fringe Right Side Unisex Winter Scarf Fringe

When you turn it over this will be the right side (RS) of your fringe. See how it has the nice neat closed ‘knots’?

Hello. I just posted this question on Ravelry, hopefully you will see one of them soon ๐Ÿ™‚
I did row 1 and ended up with 15 hdc and 14 ch1sp as in the pattern. However, row 2 is not ending up with 16 hdc and 13 ch1sp. I’m missing something, how can there be more hdc and less ch1sp? It’s probably really obvious, but I sure don’t see it. Thank you!!!
