Filet Afghans Book Review
Make a beautiful and modern blanket using a vintage technique normally reserved for crocheting doilies and table runners. Filet Afghans by Michele Mireau, includes 8 different charted designs. The designs are created by combining solid and open-space blocks using combinations of only two types of crochet stitches – double crochets and chain stitches.
The eight designs included are:
- Mulberry Ripple (EASY; 41″ x 56″)
- Blue Seagull Fantasy (EASY; 37″ x 48.5″)
- Blueberry Diamonds (EASY; 37″ x 55″)
- Lilac Mosaic (EASY; 35″ x 52″)
- Peach Opposites Attract (EASY; 37″ x 52″)
- Pink Butterfly (EASY; 41″ x 52″)
- Grey Simply Squares (EASY; 38″ x 54″)
- Yellow Springtime (EASY; 35″ x 53″)
The sizes provided above do not include the fringes.
An ‘Introduction to Filet Crochet’ is provided on page 2 and includes specific instructions on how to read filet charts. You are also given a filet chart for a small practice square to try, before you attempt one of the 8 pretty Filet Afghan designs.
Gauge swatch instructions are provided at the beginning of each pattern. It is very important for you to take the time to check gauge when working filet crochet as it makes a huge difference in the project’s finished size and appearance.
Each Filet Crochet Afghan pattern begins by providing the required number of chain stitches for the blanket and the written instructions for Row 1. For the remainder of the blanket pattern you are referred to the specific filet crochet chart. The charts are very straightforward and I find them extremely easy to follow. The patterns are designed to be crocheted using medium weight yarn and a 6 mm (J) crochet hook.
I really love the beautiful and lacy designs you can create using only basic crochet stitches. I think it would be fun to crochet these blankets and once you understand how to follow the charts (which also appears very straightforward!) they will be very easy to crochet.
