To take some of the work out of making your Poncho to the size you want, Amy and I have decided to give you the written instructions for each Poncho Size in it’s own post; rather than having you reference the charts. Separate written instructions are included for each size and each stitch also includes a helpful photo tutorial!
Easy Crochet Poncho Patterns by Size in Worsted Weight Yarn
Amy is sharing each of the sizes for DK weight yarn and I am sharing the posts for each size using Worsted Weight Yarn. If you would like the DK weight patterns please visit Amy’s website The Stitchin’ Mommy.
One note we did receive during the CAL was there was a bit of confusion because the total number of stitches in each row would occasionally vary by 1 stitch (less or more than the beginning number of stitches chained.).
If you are wondering why we have done this – it is very simple – different crochet pattern stitches have been used to create the poncho and each is based on a repeat of a specific number of stitches. Some are based on pattern repeats of 3 stitches, some on repeats of 2 stitches and a few on single stitches. As a result, on occasion, you will have an extra stitch, or one less stitch from one row to the next row.
This variation is slight (one stitch) and will not make a significant difference to the width of your rectangles. Please pay attention to the stitches though because if you do not follow what we have written for stitch counts the next pattern stitch will not work out properly. The changes in stitches are done to make the pattern stitch work. After blocking your rectangles and edging it you will be hard-pressed to see where you have a row with 1 extra, or 1 less stitch.
3 sts / inch using a 6.0 mm hook and Red Heart Soft, Worsted Weight Yarn.
2.75 sts / inch using a 6.0 mm hook and Red Heart with Love, Worsted Weight Yarn.
Please check your gauge after Row 2 is complete – if you are not where you need to be you may need to increase/decrease a hook size, or add, or subtract stitches in multiples of two. If you need help please ask 🙂
For the full details of the Official Fall Poncho CAL please visit the Introductory Post. It provides you with the measurements and starting stitch counts for all sizes, as well as, the amount of yarn you will need to complete your poncho. It also provides details for how you can make this poncho in any yarn, hook and stitch combination.
You will need to crochet 2 rectangles of the same size before completing Part 9. After working through the project one time you will need to begin again at Part 1 and use the Repeat Instructions to start the repeat of the sections. This information has been included in EACH of the Poncho Pattern Sizes. You will continue working the Rows until your poncho measures the provided length, less one inch (subtract 1 inch from the total length and stop at this measurement).
