Embroidery begins with an Introduction of the history of sewing and the types of stitches. Four groups of stitches are discussed – flat stitches, looped stitches, knotted stitches and openwork stitches.
Materials, Tools, and Techniques are outlined in the next section and include mounting and stitch techniques.
Stitch instructions are presented in 4 chapters:
- Lines and Borders – Outline Stitches, Border Stitches, Composite Border Stitches
- Filling Stitches – Powdered Filling and Isolated Stitches, Open and Solid Filling Stitches
- Openwork – Pulled Fabric Stitches, Drawn Thread and Insertion Stitches, Cutwork and Edging Stitches
- Needlepoint– Straight Needlepoint Stitches, Diagonal Needlepoint Stitches, Cross and Star Needlepoint Stitches, Looped and Tied Needlepoint Stitches
The Stitch Instructions are provided in a specific format beginning with the name of the Stitch, a Stitch Example, a list of any Other Name the stitch is commonly known by, the Skill Level, suggested Uses for the Stitch, the Method you need to follow to create the stitch, the Materials you need, Letter Annotation you follow for the direction the needle takes to make the stitch, Stitch Variation and Technique Variation. A Grid System is also found on the Needlepoint Pages.
A full written index has also been included at the end of the book to allow you to look-up a specific stitch.
Embroidery, A Step-By-Step Guide To More Than 200 Stitches is a fantastic resource filled with beautiful colour photographs and detailed instructions to allow you to master each stitch. I am personally very happy to add this book to my collection as I have been wanting to use some different stitches when embellishing my crochet projects and amigurumi toys. Knowing how to make the stitches properly will make it much easier to achieve a sturdy and attractive finished stitch.
