Puff St – half double crochet puff stitch – basically this is a hdc3tog all in the same stitch – Yarn over the hook, insert your hook into the specified stitch, yarn over and pull up 1 loop (3 loops on the hook). Yarn over the hook, insert your hook into the same stitch, yarn over and pull up 1 loop (5 loops on the hook). Yarn over the hook, insert your hook into the same stitch, yarn over and pull up 1 loop (7 loops on the hook). Yarn over the hook and pull through all 7 loops. Stitch complete.
I used the hdc3tog in the Pretty Pebbles Stitch Tutorial. In this tutorial it was called a Cluster Stitch (often Puff and Cluster are used interchangeably). You can see how the stitch is done by looking at the tutorial photos included in the Pretty Pebbles Stitch Tutorial. View images 3 to 19. Do not follow the exact instructions as the Pretty Pebbles Stitch project does not follow the same full pattern as this scarf.
Simply Scrumptious Slouch Hat
R1: Leave a 8 inch tail of yarn; ch 10, 1 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and each rem ch across, ch 1, turn
R2: 1 sc in the bl of each st across, ch 1, turn
R3-R36: rep R2
at this point the band should measure 18 inches long by 3 inches wide
You will be working along the ends of the 36 rows of the band.
Step 1: Work 39 sc evenly across the edge of the band. Bring the two ends of the band together and continue working around the band in continuous rounds. You do not need to slip stitch to join.
Note: You can either whip stitch the edges of the band together now or wait until you are finished the hat.
Body of Hat
R1: 1 sc in each st around
R2: 1 sc in the first st. *1 Puff St (see special stitches above) in the next st, 1 sc in the next st**. Rep around.
R3: *1 Puff St in the next st, 1 sc in the next st**. Rep around to the last st. Work 1 Puff St in the last st.
Rep R2 and R3; 7 more times
R18: Rep R2
R19: 1 Puff St in each sc around. Sk all Puff St from R18. You will have 20 Puff Sts at the end of this round.
R20: 1 FPsc around each Puff St.
Close the top of the hat like this:
Turn your hat inside out and flatten it on a hard surface so the last stitch is in the centre.
Step 1: Thread the yarn end on a yarn needle and whip stitch the center stitch on both sides of the hat together.
Step 2: Now take the hat and flatten it so the side edges are now lined up down the centre, on top of the stitch you just made. Sew through the middle stitch on both the top and bottom pieces of fabric.
Step 3: Now you should have 4 open ‘petals’ around a centre. Whip stitch the center stitch in each of the petals to the center. (Please note: some individuals find this is enough ‘closure’ for them for a slouch hat so if you like this look stop here!)
Step 4: This will create 8 ‘petals’ and your hat is now sufficiently shaped and closed.
Finished Hat: 10 inches in height with the band rolled up; or 12.5 inches in height with it unrolled.
