There are so many reasons to participate – a sense of community – challenges – contests – the finished project – crossing another one off my bucket list…
Sometimes I participate to learn a new skill – my reason for joining the Ravelry CAL – KRW Knitwear Stitch of the Month Afghan CAL.
Each month is based on a different stitch –
This month’s afghan squares are based on the Trinity Stitch –
Sometimes I participate because I receive an “invite” and I am interested in becoming part of a community of crocheters all working toward a common project – like with this online community:
Another reason I participate is when it is being hosted by a friend ๐
Like the CAL that Jen established on Facebook.
Yes there are CALs on Facebook too!
Here is the link to participate in the Jam Made Crochet CAL and Swap Group.ย This month we are working on this free crochet pattern: “African Sun 9″ Square” by Edith E. Smith.
Jen has an uncanny ability to pick patterns I have on my bucket list ๐ This makes it 2/2 bucket for CAL/Bucket list projects! ย Yeah!
I also participated in a CAL hosted by Wink of A Creative Being – this is the only CAL so far that I have participated in that required me to purchase a pattern. ย I just couldn’t resist. ย I learned so many new techniques working on the Overlay Crochet Mandala – techniques I can use in my day-to-day crochet projects. ย Fingers crossed Wink hosts again next year (if she isn’t too busy!). ย This is the Mandala I created using the fabulous pattern by CAROcreated on Etsy.
Thank you Carol ๐ I do love the Overlay Mandalas – it taught me so much following CaroCreated’s pattern ๐

I’ve seen a few of the Overlay Mandalas from CaroCreated….just beautiful! yours is lovely. It’s one of the ones I was looking at. I’m going to save up my change and will have to break down and buy one of these…Seems like doing this Overlay would be an awesome learning experience!
The detail work in them is beautiful! and, I think you’re right….doing those would, indeed, give you experience you could use in ‘everyday’ crochet….
off to count my pennies….have a beautiful day, Rhondda!
