Here’s how it works.
There are many different techniques for joining granny squares. This collection of tutorials includes 20 Unique Ways to Join Afghan Squares. Each of the techniques includes either a photo tutorial or a video tutorial to help you successfully master the method.
Many of these joining methods can be done with your yarn and crochet hook rather than by hand sewing your finished squares together. Some joining techniques included let you join as you go, working straight into your granny squares as you make them to create your blanket (this is called the JAYGO method).
I hope you enjoy exploring this extensive collection of ways to join granny squares!
20 Unique Ways to Join Afghan Squares
Flat Braid Join
Follow this step-by-step photo tutorial to learn how to make the flat braid join. This tutorial was prepared by Gourmet Crochet.
Simulated Braid Join
This joining method allows you to join pre-edged blocks together. It simulates the braid join but is a little bit more bulky on the reverse side of your project. This tutorial was prepared by Gourmet Crochet.
Scallop Join
This Scallop Join is faster and easier than the flat braid join. It does not have the extra twist to the center joining stitches. This Scallop Join tutorial was prepared by Gourmet Crochet.
Completely Flat Zipper Technique
This excellent photo tutorial will teach you how to use the completely flat zipper joining technique for afghans squares. The Completely Flat Zipper tutorial was prepared by Dedri Uys.
Single Crochet Joining Method
This is a simple, sturdy and balanced way to join your afghan squares. It creates an elevated seam between the squares that works like a frame for each block. The Single Crochet Joining Method tutorial was prepared by Sarah Zimmerman.
Tight Braid Join
The Tight Braid Join tutorial was prepared by Tamara Kelly. Watch the video tutorial here.
Simple Visible Join
Lovely in it’s simplicity, this simple visible joining method adds a little extra detail to your project without overwhelming the beauty of each afghan square. This tutorial was prepared by Zooty Owl.
Continuous Cluster Join
This cluster join is super pretty! The cluster stitches add a lovely textured element between each afghan square. The Continuous Cluster Join tutorial was prepared by Margaret MacInnis.
Mijo Granny Join
This join has a lovely corner element that makes it quite stunning. I love how balanced it looks between each of the squares. The Mijo Granny Join tutorial was prepared by Johanna Lindahl.
No-Hook-Out Continuous Join
This tutorial was prepared by Margaret MacInnis.
JAYGO Join-As-You-Go
In the JAYGO method, you join your afghan squares together while you are working on the final round for each square. The Join As You Go tutorial was prepared by Kara Gunza.
Flat Braid 3-Ch Crochet Join
This tutorial is very detailed (which I personally love) with lots of photos. The Flat Braid Ch-3 Crochet Join tutorial was prepared by Margaret MacInnis.
Dudessembly
This is a very different and unique style of joining your afghan squares. Full written instructions are included. The Dudessembly tutorial was prepared by Drew Emborsky.
Invisible Seam Join
The invisible seam stitch is an excellent way to join your afghan blocks together. This is also know as the mattress stitch (mattress seam) and it really is invisible! This Invisible Seam tutorial was prepared by BHooked Crochet. Watch the video here.
