Each pattern is written in UK Crochet terms. You will find the general abbreviations and very important tension (gauge) information on page 41.
The patterns are written in an easy to follow manner, starting with the measurements for the designs. Along with the “to fit chest” sizes, you will also find “actual measurements” for the finished projects (actual: chest, length of garment, sleeve length, etc.).
Age | newborn | 0-3 months | 3-6 months | 6-12 months | 9-12 months | 12-24 months |
To Fit Chest (inches) | 12 | 14 | 16 | 18 | 20 | 22 |
The Materials section is next, and it includes the amount of yarn you need for each of the six sizes, the hook sizes for the design and extra supplies like buttons and zippers. The specific gauge (tension) information is provided next, using a 4 inch square (10 cm square) sample size. If you have less or more stitches within your sample than that listed in the Tension section there are specific instructions on how to change your hook size to reach gauge. The Special Abbreviations are provided next and include written instructions to ensure you understand how to make the stitches.
Each design is separated into sections for the parts of the garment you are making. For example for Design Ten (Coat), we begin with the Bodice, proceed to Left Front, Shape Neck, Back before beginning Right Front, Shape Neck and Skirt. Then the Sleeves and Edging parts for the fabric and finally the To Make Up instructions.
Many of the abbreviations and terms for the patterns are the same as we would use in US Crochet Terms but some are slightly different. I’ve included the crochet terms you will find in the patterns below because I don’t want you to feel like you can’t make these beautiful projects just because you are more comfortable working in US terms.
